Virtual Inventory : The Facts

and nothing but the facts...
O.k, heres the truth and the ugly truth that it is...

Virtual inventory is legally, well illegal. What some retailers are trying to get around is not have the ability or the smarts to purchase wine beers and spirits in an intelligent and fiscally responsible manner.

These retailers are usually larger chain stores that do nothing but listen to their favored sales reps from their distributors that give them the highest kick backs and fill their stores with junk bulk wine that any true wine lover would much less sniff than drink!

On the subject of legality, and you can check this with most any state; a retailer is not allowed to take payment for goods in any way shape or form unless they have a signed bill of lading or an invoice inĀ  their possession for such goods. Stores that are running virtual inventory are taking orders over the Internet, taking possession of your money without having the goods in stock. They will then scramble to try and get the goods from their suppliers and deliver your order to you. What happens more often than not is the store cannot get the goods from the supplier and then tries to sell you something else in place of your original order so they don't have to go through the hassel of refunding you your money. This is 100% illegal.

(*As a note some hosts like to use a loophole known as "auth only" when consumating a sale and calling it a "deposit". Again, a horse by any other name is still a horse. Retailers are not allowed to consumate sales against goods they do not have an invoice or bill of lading for.)

Furthermore, most stores running these virtual inventory stores online are taking your credit card information through a host that in turn emails it to the store. All your credit card info emailed; unencrypted and completely visible to anyone who cares to sniff that transmission. Sound like a nightmare? I have seen it first hand!

So on top of the fact that these virtual stores are taking orders for goods that they don't have and cannot get, they are breaking every PCI credit card compliance code that there is.

Where is the accountability? The ABC has just begun taking action against stores that are running rampant with virtual inventory. Is there an alternative? Yes, Digital Wine Archive does not host virtual inventory sites and is 100% PCI compliant. Not only is your data secured but you are guaranteed to get what you pay for.

Beware of sites running virtual inventory. These hosts are notorious for poor Internet publishing standards and not complying with PCI credit card standards.
